Counting conch, watching parrotfish, and measuring corals, all were a part of Ceiba’s 2021 summer Marine Biology course in Belize. After an info-packed two weeks of online learning, 15 excited students headed for the coral reef for two weeks of snorkeling, scuba diving, and underwater research projects.
The course was based on Middle Caye, a tiny island on the world-famous Glovers Reef Marine Reserve. This pristine coral atoll, a two-hour boat ride off the Belizean coast, has been home to countless researchers based at the Wildlife Conservation Society facilites on the island. There, students ate traditional meals (beans and rice and stew chicken!), and had dozens of patch reefs available for study just a short swim from the dock. Everyone got a little sunburned, and a little bug-bitten, but came home with newfound snorkeling skills, and valuable experience conducting marine research!
