On April 16, 2016, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the coast of Ecuador. The epicenter was located near Pedernales, a mere 33 miles from the Bosque Seco Lalo Loor Reserve. The coastal communities were gravely affected including the communities that we have been working with for many years.
Ceiba, along with the help of Third Millennium Alliance, and Finca Mono Verde, were among the first to respond with immediate relief. We brought supplies and worked with community leaders to organize shelters and supply distribution. Since our immediate response, Ceiba staff and communities have worked tirelessly to clean-up and begin the rebuilding process. The road to recovery will be long, arduous, and expensive but with the collaboration between the communities of Tabuga and Camarones and with the help of the municipal government and other non-profits, we are well on our way to rebuilding a more resilient community which includes new seismic-resistant dwellings, as well as community centers, a local market, and other infrastructure to create a self-sustaining economy.
